What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization, Explained

Google used to give you ten blue links. Now it often answers the question right at the top of the page, and ChatGPT skips the links and just writes you a paragraph. If you want your page to be the source of that answer, you need AEO.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) means writing and structuring a page so a search engine or an AI assistant can pull a clean answer straight off it. That answer might land in a featured snippet, a "People also ask" box, or a ChatGPT reply. Regular SEO tries to rank your page. AEO tries to win the answer that sits above the rankings.

You still need both. You have to rank well enough to be in the running, but the page that answers the question most cleanly often wins the snippet even when it sits third.

How answer engines choose a source

They look for a passage that stands on its own and answers the question in roughly 40 to 60 words, near the top of a page that is clearly about that topic. If your answer is scattered across four paragraphs, the engine gives up and grabs it from a page that already did the work.

A few habits make that easy:

  • Put the question in a heading. "How much does an SEO audit cost?" tells the engine exactly what the section is for.
  • Answer in the first sentence, then explain. Do not warm up for a paragraph before you get to the point.
  • Keep the answer self-contained so it still makes sense pulled off the page.
  • Use a list or a table when the answer is list-shaped. Those get quoted far more than a block of text.

So how is this different from SEO?

Nothing you already do for SEO stops mattering. You still earn links, cover topics properly, and fix the technical stuff. AEO is what you add on top: a short answer near the top, headings written as real questions, an FAQ with schema, and answers a machine can read without a human to interpret them.

If someone skimming your page can find the answer in five seconds, so can an answer engine. Write for the skimmer.

A five-minute pass for any page

  1. Add a 40 to 60 word answer right under the H1.
  2. Rewrite two or three headings as the questions people actually search.
  3. Open each section by answering its heading in the first sentence.
  4. Add a short FAQ with FAQPage schema.
  5. If the topic is a "best" or "vs" query, add one comparison table.

That covers most of it. If you want the long version, our AEO/GEO checklist breaks it into 250 items, and the free SEO and GEO tools can draft an FAQ or a snippet block for you. Once your answers are solid, the next job is getting AI assistants to actually cite them, which is what GEO covers.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from SEO?

AEO is a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement. SEO gets you ranking; AEO structures the content so an engine can lift a direct answer from your page into a snippet or an AI reply. You need both.

How long should a snippet answer be?

Aim for 40 to 60 words. Long enough to answer completely, short enough to fit a featured snippet or a spoken answer.

Does FAQ schema help with AEO?

Yes. FAQPage structured data makes your questions and answers machine-readable, which improves your odds of appearing in People Also Ask boxes and being quoted by AI assistants.

Can I win a snippet without ranking on page one?

Often yes. Google frequently pulls featured snippets from results ranked 2 to 8 if that page answers the question more cleanly than the one ranked first.

How do I start with AEO today?

Pick your top three pages, add a 40 to 60 word quick answer under each H1, turn headings into real questions, and add an FAQ with schema. That single pass captures most of the upside.
