GEO: How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini & Perplexity

Ask ChatGPT for the best tool in your category and it names a few. Ask Perplexity and it names a few, then links its sources. GEO is how you become one of the names it says, and one of the links it shows.

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of getting an AI assistant to mention, recommend, or cite your brand when someone asks about your space. The ones that matter are ChatGPT, Google Gemini and AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. More and more people ask those tools a question instead of searching for it.

Ranking a page and getting cited by an AI are not the same job. A model does not show a list you can climb. It reads a lot, decides what it trusts, writes an answer, and sometimes links a source or two. GEO is about shaping what it reads and how much it trusts you.

Why AI assistants ignore your brand

Usually it is one of three things. The model has not seen enough clear, factual writing about you. Your competitors are described the same way all over the web, so they get named and you do not. Or your pages read like a brochure, heavy on adjectives and light on the plain facts a model can lift.

How to get cited

  • Be easy to quote. Write factual sentences a model can copy without editing. "Creative Nexus audits a site across Google, Bing and AI search" works. "We deliver best-in-class visibility solutions" does not.
  • Lead with the answer, the same way you would for AEO. Put the fact at the top of the section, not buried at the bottom.
  • Describe your brand the same way everywhere: same name, same category, same one-line description on your site, LinkedIn, directories, and press. Models trust an entity they keep seeing described the same way.
  • Get other sites to say it too. A claim repeated on third-party sites counts for far more than the same claim sitting only on your homepage.
  • Give machines clean signals: structured data, an llms.txt file, an FAQ. We generate those inside the platform.
Search rewards the page that ranks. AI search rewards the brand that is described clearly and consistently across the whole web.

How to measure it

There is no ranking to check, so you check citations instead. Ask the assistants the questions your buyers ask, and note whether you show up, how you are described, and who gets named in your place. Do it on a schedule, because the answers move every time the models retrain. Our free GEO tools score a page for AI-readiness, and the platform runs this citation check across engines every week.

None of this replaces SEO. The brands AI cites are usually the ones already ranking and already trusted, so get the fundamentals right first, then add GEO on top.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO ranks your pages in search results. AEO structures content to win direct-answer slots like snippets. GEO gets your brand cited and recommended inside AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Each one builds on the last.

Can I control what ChatGPT says about my brand?

Not directly, but you influence it. Clear, consistent, factual content about your brand across your own site and third-party sources shapes how models describe and recommend you.

Does structured data help with GEO?

Yes. Schema, a clean llms.txt file and an FAQ give AI assistants unambiguous facts to quote, which raises your odds of being cited accurately.

How do I track AI citations?

Ask the assistants your buyers real questions on a regular schedule and record whether you are mentioned, how you are described, and which competitors appear. Tools can automate this across engines.

Is GEO worth it if I am a small brand?

Yes. A small brand described clearly and consistently often gets cited over a bigger one whose content is vague, because models reward clarity, not size.
