How to earn backlinks (the white-hat way)

Earn links that lift rankings and AI citations, without buying links or risking a penalty.

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Search engines read links as votes of trust: pages with more links from relevant, credible sites tend to rank higher. In 2026 the same authority signals also shape which sources AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews quote, so earning links is now an SEO and an AEO/GEO play at once.

What makes a backlink valuable

  • Relevance, a link from a site in your topic is worth far more than a random one.
  • Authority, links from sites that are themselves widely trusted (high Domain Rating / referring domains) pass more value.
  • Editorial placement, a link inside real content beats a footer, sidebar or directory listing.
  • Dofollow, a normal link passes authority; rel="nofollow"/"sponsored" links pass little to none.
  • Diversity, many different domains linking to you beats many links from one site.

Don't buy links or use PBNs. Paid, link-scheme and private-blog-network links violate Google's spam policies and can get your site demoted or deindexed. Every tactic below earns links editorially, the only kind that's safe and durable.

Seven white-hat ways to earn links

  1. 1Reclaim unlinked mentions, find sites that name your brand but don't link, and ask them to add one. Highest hit-rate outreach there is.
  2. 2Competitor link-gap, see who links to your rivals but not to you; those sites already link to your space.
  3. 3Digital PR / expert commentary, answer journalist queries (HARO-style) and pitch data or opinions worth citing.
  4. 4Guest posts on real, relevant publications, genuine articles for genuine audiences (not spun content on link farms).
  5. 5Linkable assets, original research, free tools, templates and stats pages that people cite naturally.
  6. 6Resource-page and broken-link outreach, get added to curated lists; offer your page as a replacement for a dead link.
  7. 7Partnerships & testimonials, suppliers, integrations and customers who'll link back.

The Backlink Agent (Agency plan) automates the tedious parts: it discovers prospects across these lanes, scores them by real authority, finds the right contact, and drafts a personalised outreach sequence, draft-first, so nothing sends until you approve it.

Backlinks and AI citations

AI assistants tend to cite sources they can verify and that other trusted sites reference. Earning links to your best pages raises the odds those pages get pulled into AI answers. Pair link-building with your AEO/GEO work, clear direct answers, FAQ schema, an llms.txt and a strong brand entity, so the pages you're earning links to are also the easiest for an AI to quote.

Measure it: re-run the AI-visibility tracker after an outreach push, and watch referring domains in Search Console. Rankings and citations move on a lag, give it a few weeks.

Common questions

How many backlinks do I need?

There's no magic number. A handful of links from relevant, high-authority sites will do more than hundreds from low-quality ones. Focus on the quality and relevance of referring domains, not raw link count.

Is buying backlinks worth it?

No. Paid links violate Google's link-spam policy and can trigger a penalty that costs you far more than the links were worth. They also tend to be low quality. Earning links editorially is safer, cheaper over time, and the only approach AI assistants and Google actually reward.

How long until backlinks affect rankings?

Usually a few weeks to a few months. Search engines need to crawl the linking page, and rankings adjust gradually. AI citations can lag similarly. Treat link-building as compounding, not instant.

What's a dofollow vs nofollow link?

A normal (dofollow) link passes authority to your site. A rel="nofollow", "sponsored" or "ugc" link tells search engines not to pass authority. A natural link profile has mostly dofollow links plus some nofollow, that mix looks organic.
